What is an AGPL-3.0 license? Can I use it commercially?

The GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL) version 3 is an open source software license developed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF). This license adds provisions to the existing GNU General Public License (GPL) regarding the use of software over the network.

Main features:

  • Obligation to publish source code: If you provide software licensed under AGPLv3 over a network, you are obliged to provide the source code to you. This protects the user’s right to investigate the inside of the software and make improvements and changes.
  • Expanded copyleft coverage: While the previous GPL required the release of source code only when distributing software, AGPLv3 imposes similar obligations for use over the network (e.g., web services and SaaS).
  • Limitations on Commercial Use: AGPLv3 does not prohibit commercial use, but companies should consider the fact that utilizing AGPLv3-licensed software in commercial services still entails an obligation to publish the source code.

AGPLv3 aims to protect users’ rights when using software over the network while promoting the free use and modification of software.
